My 12 year-old, Tom, has not eaten a vegetable in so long that I could be reported to the mom police and get hard time.
Before his first birthday, my darling, perfect baby quickly showed his independence the minute I offered him his first taste of broccoli. He pushed away his plate with a dismissive wave of his little hand. It was war.
A war I was determined to win. I was older and wiser, wasn’t I?
Ha!
Before I had children, I vowed to practice and preach good nutrition. I exclusively breast fed Tom until he was six months old, and then fed solid foods in their most natural form. I foolishly believed the books that said, “If you feed it, they will eat it!”
I did not have white bread, soda, or sugared juices in my house. I diligently introduced new foods, always looking to expand his palate. I served pumpkin ravioli, spinach brownies, zucchini muffins. It was my mission in life to raise a well-rounded, well-read, vegetable-eating person.
Nothing I did made my wonderful little boy eat a vegetable. I covered a host of vegetables with cheese, butter, or brown sugar to no avail. Sometimes I got lucky, and he would eat a sauce with puree of carrots or sweet potato. I can’t tell you the pure happiness I would feel, only to be dropped into a depression the next day when he would say, “No tank you mommy.”
I dreaded each check-up when the pediatrician asked about his eating. I still remember his five-year check-up when our pediatrician asked Tom if he ate vegetables.
Yes, he replied.
I was speechless.
He then added, “I just don’t eat anything green, orange, red, or yellow.”
The pediatrician replied, “What do you eat then?”
“Pizza,” was his proud reply.
Now I know some of you may be thinking that I just didn’t try hard enough. That’s fine. I can live with your disdain. I know in my soul I did everything possible.
Some children, no matter what you try, just have certain food aversions.
Do you know how I know this? I have two other children.
By the time Lizzy and Peter came along, I was so wiped out by the food wars that I joined the ketchup-is-a-vegetable cult. The only way they saw a green thing was on my plate. And they begged for it.
Lizzy and Peter get so excited over broccoli that Tom tried it once, just because he thought maybe he was missing something!
Beets, kale, lima beans, you name it, and my two darlings will eat it. They have actually passed up ice cream to eat more green beans!
Are they freaks of nature?
Did God just feel sorry for me and make sure he found me two vegetable-eating children?
Or, are there just some things that are out of my control?
Our first pediatrician told me that my job as a mother was to offer and provide three nutritious meals a day, and my children's job was to eat them, or not.
That’s some of the best advice I have ever been given, and it doesn't only apply to food.
It’s my job as my children’s ambassador to the world to introduce and offer all that I think is safe and appropriate, and it’s their job to decide what works for them and what doesn’t.
As much as I love this advice, I still find it a bitter pill to swallow. And not always easy to follow. Especially as they get older.
What if they choose wrong? What if they get hurt?
Tom is going to be 13 in a few short months. There will be so many things the world will throw his way. So many choices that at times really can mean life or death. So many things that will be out of my control that I can literally loose sleep if I allow myself to think too hard about it.
As much as I hate to think about it, Tom, as well as his brother and sister will make mistakes. I know I made my share, it's how I learned some of my most valuable lessons.
Perhaps in respecting my son's food preference's, while still introducing him to a wide variety of food, I'm doing more than dealing with the food wars. I'm giving him the building blocks to make decisions for himself.
The broccoli battle was Tom's first attempt at independence. My loving withdrawal and a really good multivitamin was, and continues to be, my gift to him.

The Long Goodbye
Watching someone you love get older and change is hard. The obvious question comes to mind, how will you go on without them in your life? The time has come for our family to face a harsh reality: Fuzzy the Bear isn't looking so good and probably doesn't have much time left.
Fuzzy is the closest companion of our youngest child, Peter. Fuzzy has been a trusted and highly valued member of our family since Peter was nine months old and received him as a Christmas present from my husband's nephew.
At first, Fuzzy was indeed Fuzzy. Fluffy even. He had a big plaid bow around his neck, and our little guy and him were inseparable. The bear was almost as big as Peter was. I loved the peaceful look on my child's face as he would lay in his crib and cuddle and play with his friend.
I totally credit Fuzzy for allowing Peter to sleep through the night and deal with the stress of our family. Things can get pretty crazy here. We have gone through the constant ups and downs of having a child with special needs. The ongoing roller coaster of scary tests, scary behaviors, and scary diagnoses being considered and dismissed for our beautiful middle child, Lizzy, has been very difficult for my husband and me. I can only imagine how confusing it must be for both our sons to witness.
Peter was also speech-delayed and having Fuzzy to cuddle and hold made the difficult times a bit easier. Speech, occupational, and physical therapy sessions were a little more manageable if Fuzzy was there. I have to admit there have been plenty of times through the years where I have wished for my own Fuzzy.
Fuzzy has come with us on vacations, daily outings and even two hospital visits. Fuzzy proudly wore scrubs twice when Peter had to have some minor surgery at 11 months and again at 3. He has been returned late at night when left behind at grandma's or lost in the car.
He was even with Peter when he started preschool at two until the school expelled the bear a few months later.
I'm told It was a pretty heated debate among the staff as to who was going to take Fuzzy from Peter the day it was decided that he would have to go it alone so he could learn how to play and communicate with the other toddlers in his speech-delayed class.
Fortunately for us the wonderful head teacher Miss Lara was willing to put up with the two weeks of Peter barely talking to her. The assistant teachers would laugh when Peter would come in all smiles and then just glare at his "once" beloved teacher.
Fuzzy has been washed more times that I can count. It's not unusual for Peter to wait in the laundry room till his friend's "bath" is over. It's not unusual for me to secretly pray that the pillow case I use to wash Fuzzy in will once again protect his aging body from the rigors of the washing machine.
Fuzzy's once fluffy yarn fur is now matted and looks more like a petri dish than a stuffed animal. The plaid bow that once adorned the bear's neck is nothing more than a memory. But, I suspect that adds to his appeal.
The other day Peter came to my room, crying and saying Fuzzy was broken. I was a little nervous. How would my little guy cope without his dear friend? How could I manage with less sleep than I already get?
Now six, Peter is certainly better prepared to go it alone. Words that were hard to say are coming more easily. Our family is learning how to deal with the uncertainty of Lizzy's special needs. I know Peter could go it alone if need be. He has other animals that would help comfort him as he goes to sleep. But, there is still only one Fuzzy.
I gently took Fuzzy in my hands and gave him a quick Dr. Mommy examination. I noticed that the only thing really broken about Fuzzy, besides the obvious wear and tear from six years of affection, was that his ear was very frayed from where my son fingers him as he lies down to hear a story and fall asleep at night.
"Peter, Fuzzy is not broken, he is just very loved."
"Fuzzy is loved?"
"Yes honey, that's all."
He went to tell his brother his new found knowledge. "Tom, Fuzzy's not broken, he is just loved".
Of course the time is coming when Fuzzy will no longer be there, or even needed. But for now we will both cherish the time we have left. And I'm glad a stuffed animal is all it takes to make the great big world a little more manageable for one little boy.

Searching for a Super Power Upgrade
As I was cutting up some apples to make a fruit salad for my three kids, I found myself getting very frustrated with the little angels. I was smiling my best mommy smile as I counted the fruit and went over the colors... red apples... blue berries... oranges.... doing my best to educate as I entertained. But, my kids would have none of it.
Apparently, I was just not going fast enough. Peter, our six-year-old, kept announcing the fruits that remained in pure desperation. Seeing with his own eyes that I was cutting the apples with the knife was not enough to convince him that I was in fact serious about making this salad.
I was about to scream "I am only a human being" when it hit me like a ton of bricks. My super powers are almost gone! The warranty must have expired and I was none the wiser.
The card must have gotten lost among all the other papers, bills, and catalogs that come by the truckload to this house everyday.
Fear not. I will just purchase a new set of super powers.
But, this time I'm spending the big bucks and going for an upgrade. Mere eyes in the back of my head will not do anymore. My kids are getting older. My oldest will become a teenager in less than six months. I can't be fooling around with discount super powers.
The following is a list of powers I will be adding to my few remaining powers of kissing cuts and banishing monsters under the bed.
IN-VISA-MOM - I'm adding the invisibility option. True, up to this point my almost dog-like hearing powers have been enough to thwart a siege of 11-year-olds at a sleepover from raiding the fridge at 2:00 in the morning. Or, hear a hand of my nine-year-old daughter before it hits her younger brother in a toy theft.
But, who am I kidding? We are moving into the teen years. I need the power to not be seen as I say goodbye to my 12 year-old son. Plus it sure could come in handy at the middle school canteens, where the mere thought of having me chaperone is enough to make him faint.
MOMMY-GO-FASTER -- As I said, my current speed option is shot. Once I could cut the fruit and just use my sparkling personality to amuse the children. No more. I need the super speed option with the ability to cut fruit into perfectly proportioned pieces carefully leaving no skin on the apples.
Truthfully, I really need to be able to just blink and produce the fruit salad. Unfortunately, I have been told that option won't be ready for a few more years.
I was looking into the thaw-the-ice-cream-with-my-touch option, but that was just going to put me way over budget. The kids are just going to have to settle for the microwave.
LIFT-A-KID-ABILITY, otherwise known as the SUPER-STRENGTH OPTION -- This is a must. My six-year-old is getting bigger, but I'm not quite ready to give up carrying him up the stairs when he falls asleep in the playroom. It's bad enough I have to wake his sister and brother as I usher them up the stairs. The idea of not being able to hold at least one of my kids in my arms is just too much for me.
MEGA-MOM-MIND -- I have been in need of the mommy memory upgrade for some time. I thought I was covering up the fact that I couldn't always remember my children's names by using a variety of pet names, but Peter is now insisting that I use his real name. The jig is up, I need the advanced version of Super Mom Memory and I need it fast.
Fortunately for me an extra dose of patience is already included in the deluxe package. Mine is a bit frayed, but I hear this new version can withstand the teen years. I'm a little doubtful, but I'm in this mothering game for the long haul, and I'll take whatever help I can get.
I'm very disappointed to hear that they have not come up with a super power to freeze time.
My kids are growing so fast. I have only my memories and a few hundred photos to remind me of the feel and scent of each child as a newborn sleeping in my arms. Or, the look of pure joy that Tom and Lizzy had when they met their new brother Peter, for the first time. Or, the look of fear mixed with pride each time a new school year rolls around and I make all three of them take a "First day of School" picture.
Of all the Super Powers I could think of, this is the one I would pay a king's ransom for.
Just in case my Super Powers should be on back-order, I will just have to rely on what I was given the day I had each one of my babies... An amazing amount of love for each child and the knowledge that no matter how bad a day I might be having as a mom, the absolute best day before I had my children doesn't even come close.

You Are Not Going Crazy...it's not Sunday!
Shock of all shocks I 'm posting and it's not Sunday! Why, do you ask? Well, Laura Sauer, a wonderful mom has asked me to do a guest post on her very important and personal blog:
Families Coping With Infant Stroke
http://familiescopingwithinfantstroke.blogspot.com
This post is very personal and recounts some of my initial feelings when I first realized my beautiful daughter Lizzy had something wrong with her. For those of you who expect a little laughter along with my posts, I have to say, I'm not very funny here.
Like Laura and her family, our family has been forever changed by having a member who has a neurological disorder. Laura' infant son suffered a stroke in utero. Lizzy's extensive brain damage is most likely caused by genetic factors.
Though our stories are different we both feel the more information and real families people meet the harder it will be for the world to dismiss those who may be different. I am so grateful and honored that Laura asked me to guest post. Please stop by and let me know what you think!!
I have the most amazing readers and always appreciate the support you give me week after week! Thank you! Much love to you all.

Finding Home
As I was sliding down the hill, I had to question the wisdom of taking the trail my 12-year-old, Tom, wanted to take. I figured that because I was with my dad, it would be OK. But my dear 71-years-young father was way ahead of me and wasn't looking back. I had lost sight of him.
Tom was behind me exclaiming that this was the best day of his life.
For a minute I panicked. We were 15 minutes from home in a state park I've known since the age of nine, but I feared we were hopelessly lost. There are few things I hate more than being lost, and I'll do anything to avoid it.
I have the poorest sense of direction in human history. I can get lost trying to get out of a paper bag.
Tom still had no idea something was wrong. Then I had a momentary flashback to 35 years ago.
I was 10 and at a sleep away camp, deep in the woods. That first morning, I woke up before anyone else and needed the bathroom. I had declined my counselor's sleepy offer to walk me to the outhouse a small distance from our cabin.
Getting to the outhouse was fine. But the return trip? I guess I turned in the wrong direction. Two hours later and I still hadn't found my way back to the cabin.
There I was in my little baby doll pajamas going from cabin to cabin hoping to find mine. Each time a counselor would give me directions to get back to my cabin. Not wanting to look anymore foolish then I already did, I acted like I understood just fine. Off I would go, only to get more lost.
Finally I stumbled onto a cabin of boys and that counselor brought me back to my group. I was lost for almost three hours.
Oddly enough I don't remember ever crying or showing anyone just how terrified I was. Even at the age of 10, far from home, completely lost, I still wanted to look like I had it all together.I was always terrified that people would know I was dyslexic. At times I felt so lost in school. It was as if I was on the wrong planet and everyone spoke another language. I was always looking for the way home. Someplace where I didn't have to work so hard to fit in.
Oddly enough, I didn't know that the place I was looking for was one that I would create myself. With the help of a guy I met on a blind date 21 years ago this month who understood and listened to me when I said I couldn't do something. He told me I could do it anyway. For the first time, I believed it.
"I can't type..." "I can't go to college..." "I can't drive..." "I will be lost." Each of my fears was countered by a "Yes you can." And then I did.
Learning to find my way home, through the doubt and the fear, allows me to teach my three children that they too can go where they want to. Even when it feels impossible, they take the steps required to get out of the forest and return home.
It doesn't matter if the challenge is learning to read for Peter, seventh-grade math for Tom, or the many obstacles of being a special needs child for Lizzy. The kids are finding their way, and I'm finding mine.
In my heart, I know how hard it is to feel completely lost, and I know the joy when you realize you can do what you once thought was impossible.
These thoughts came to me as I was sliding down the hill at the park. With my heart beating a tad faster, I came to the end of the hill. Tom quickly followed behind me.
We were none the worse for the wear. We found our way back on the path and my now gloating dad.
Tom can't wait to do it all again tomorrow.
Neither can I.

Best Management Training on Earth
The other night I was so tired, and our youngest, Peter, was just not going to sleep. It was one in the morning, and I was desperate. I brought out the big gun.
"Peter, that's it. I'm putting on All the Presidents Men".
"No mommy. No All the Presidents Men," came his plea for mercy.
I was too tired for mercy.
Yes, my secret is out. When I can't get my youngest to sleep, I bring him into my room (if he's not there already) and put on a movie that's guaranteed to bore him to sleep. All the Presidents Men is my strongest weapon. If I'm feeling a little more patient, it's Julie and Julia or Field of Dreams.
But this was a night for a political thriller.
Before Woodward met Bernstein, Peter was asleep.
I've developed such a strange skill set in 12 years of motherhood that I started thinking how I could possibly define it if I was ever looking for work in the corporate world again. How could I possibly sum up all the creative problem solving I've done as a mom? Is there a position where I could use all these skills?
As I was considering my options, I thought about CEO of a Fortune 500 company or perhaps Secretary of State.
Yes, Secretary Clinton's impressive resume includes turns as senator, first lady, lawyer, and congressional aide on her way to becoming the nation's chief diplomat. Admittedly, I've been none of these.
But, how much do you want to bet that when it comes down to the nitty-gritty negotiations she has to do with world leaders, she relies on her time as a mom as much as any other position she's held?
Who does more day-to-day negotiations than a mother? Every day we have to get our little darlings to do things that they just don't want to do. Eat with a fork, use the potty, not put their fingers in their noses, and that's just for starters.
When my oldest, Tom, was four, he refused to go into a Friendly's restaurant because he feared they might play music that he found painful to his ears. I spent almost an hour, slowly and carefully getting him from the car to the restaurant, determined that he not let fear rule his life. Now it may not be the same as getting Middle Eastern heads of state to the negotiating table, but, it's pretty close.
Thankfully I had my own dad to encourage me and stay with a then one-year-old Lizzy while she slept in the car. But, every good executive has assistants to help her out with difficult assignments.
I have made burping noises while cutting fingernails so little people don't get freaked out but don't have cat claws either. I have sung, ate and swallowed every animal in "I Know an Old Lady Who Swalled a Fly" to entertain children while we wait for what seemed like hours in doctors' offices. I even came up with a story of a princess who learned to get out of the pool without screaming, so I could avoid a meltdown and get everybody out of said pool in one piece.
I am no pushover either. I have slashed TV, iPod, and movie privileges when the situation called for it, and I did not back down. If I could withstand the furror of a tweenager, I'm pretty sure I could handle a board room of executives.
We haven't even spoken about the multi-tasking required to diaper a baby, contain a toddler, and make an appointment with the pediatrician all at the same time as you look over a picture book with your eldest child lest they feel left out. It's perfect preperation for a board meeting.
Motherhood may be the best training ground we have to develop strong leaders and heads of industries.
If there are any future leaders who don't have time right now to start their own families, yet would like a crash course in a) negotiating, b) improving productivity, and c) operating on time and within budget, I will gladly let them spend time with my family. Come spend a few days being in the trenches of motherhood with me. It's a sacrifice I would make for the good of my country.
